Paper Innovations – Preston

I&R Demolition was awarded the contract on behalf of a new client Ladson Group to demolish the old Paper Innovation site in the centre of Preston ready for construction to start on The Printworks which consisted of 218 studio apartments for the UCLan university campus. The site consisted of a large portal frame building which used to belong to a printing company and an old 3 story office building to the front of the site which used to be a biscuit factory years ago consisting of brick and cast iron column construction.

As most of the buildings where directly located on the main road we had to carefully plan the demolition times to fall in line with key road closure dates that where available. Traffic management and diversion routes where setup to help flow of traffic and minimise disruption. The 3 story building was scaffolded and debris netted for safety measures with the front elevation taken down by hand.

Once the demolition was complete the site was remediated ready for piling. The 3 story structure also had a cellar the full perimeter of the building at 10 foot deep, this had to be broken out and removed to ensure there would be no issues with piling foundations for the new building. As with any old site like this there can be hidden foundations or underground structures left over from its previous use. This site was no different as we excavated the old yard we uncovered an old cellar with a concrete floor which if left undiscovered could have caused issues in the construction phase. Once all the demolition and site remediation was complete all the hardcore generated was crushed and exported off site to be used in new road construction.

Demolition was completed in a 10 week period ready for construction to start in the New Year.
